Mandelic acid, also known as DL mandelic acid, is a white oblique flaky crystal. Melting point is 119°C. Easily soluble in hot water, ether and isopropanol, but insoluble in ethanol. Exposure for too long will cause discoloration and decomposition. It can be prepared by the action of benzaldehyde and dibromide acetophenone. Used in organic synthesis, it is a special reagent for the determination of zirconium.
